The Value of Great Leadership

The word value is something that most people misunderstand just like the word leader or leadership. Value is the worth that you place on something or someone. The dictionary defines value as a relative worth, merit, or importance. How important is great leadership to you?

Recognizing that being a leader isn’t easy is one of the first steps to appreciating the value of great leadership. A leader is so many things in today’s society, a coach, advisor, motivator, instructor, etc. The value of great leadership is “priceless”! Leadership is the backbone to all successes and failures in life. Everything hinges off of it! Without it there is no direction, purpose, or plan.

Without great leadership people will be lost.

Without great leadership people will be distracted.

Without great leadership people will struggle unnecessarily.

Without great leadership people will walk around underdeveloped.

Without great leadership people will be confused and non- productive.

As a busy husband, father, military officer, leader, blogger, radio host, business man, and student I recognize the value of great leadership by recognizing that I need it to survive. Many people think it’s not possible, but with great leadership anything and everything is possible. You too can be successful in life when you attach the proper value to great leadership.

During my study of leadership I focused on how one could be effect and what it takes to do so, but there are so many other aspects to leadership and I want to encourage you to increase your library with authors such a John Maxwell, Larry Bossidy, Stephen Covey, and Jim Collins.

As a father, I have learned so much from my daughters on how to be effective in leadership. Simply do what you say, say what you mean and care by helping others achieve better in life.

The Characteristics of Successful Leadership

Last week we discussed the two types of people in this world as it relates to leadership. There are those who want to be led and then there are those who desire to lead. We also discussed a few of the secrets of effective leadership. We talked about the visionary style of leadership and how it sees the big picture for the long haul. The key to this and all types of leadership is to be able to communicate clearly & concisely to those they lead.
Today, I want to deal with the characteristics of successful leadership. In life we must know and understand when to make changes and shifts that will affect the bottom line which is the overall goal of a leader.
A leader must be bold, adaptable, and willing to experience new things if they desire to effectively lead others. The traits of team building are essential to being a successful. The following characteristics are not the only characteristics of successful leadership, but have proven to be most effective in the last twenty years.

The practice of progressively getting better at being:
A Listener- one who observes and deciphers the thought, intent, or action of others

Being compassionate- a person who places interest in others

A Learner- availing yourself to be a student that is teachable

Appreciative – thankful, thoughtful, grateful, and respectful

Selfless Contributor- giving of yourself and adding value to others without being the spotlight

Effective Communicator-speaking with the intent of being understood

Guide/ Instructor – to influence and navigate others to achieve better

Attitude of a Winner- learning to win with others (delegation with winning in mind)

SECRETS OF LEADERSHIP

Today, I want to talk to you about a topic that is near and dear to my heart LEADERSHIP! Leadership is a necessity to everyone in life whether it is being led by one, learning how to be one, or being a leader of leaders. The art of leadership in its simplest form is to motivate and influence others to do what needs to be done. Leadership is a part of our everyday life which effect things like time management, organization, communication, discipline, and ultimately success.

I have found that there are two types of people in this world when it comes to leadership. The first type is the people who want to be led. These are the people who have the ability to follow the instruction and direction of others and are comfortable in assisting to get what they know needs to be done. They are not bothered by not being out front and in charge. They accept the rule or realm of authority that is given to them and enjoy seeing the project come together by accomplishing their piece of the puzzle. They have no desire to be responsible for others but accept responsibility for their own actions. The second type is those people who desire to lead others. This group of people is the dreamers and they desire to see others reach their maximum potential. They have the ability to see the potential in people and desire to draw it out of them. This is achieved by motivating and influencing them to do what needs to be done while focusing their attention on their ability to effectively accomplish the task.

As a military officer, I have experienced some great leaders as well as some not so great leaders on their road in this leadership journey. First, I would like to say that not everyone is cut out for leadership. I would also like to dispel the myth that position makes you a leader. It is very simple to measure yourself against the two types of people as it pertains to leadership. One thing is for sure despite feelings and emotions you are one or the other NO EXCEPTIONS!

It takes a visionary to be a leader! What does that mean? A visionary is one who sees the big picture. Visionary leaders provide long-term direction and vision by being clear and concise. This is the golden secret to every leadership style is being (Clear & Concise). The secret to it is sharing, entrusting others, and being open and transparent as to what you see. This helps those who are being led to buy into the concept of accomplishing the task by utilizing their skills, talents, and abilities to do so.

Here are a few secrets of leadership that I have learned over the last two decades.

Being approachable (Having an openness that allows your people to have meaningful dialogue without repercussion)

Being teachable (Accepting the fact that you are not the end all meet all on every subject and that you can learn from anyone)

Knowing who you have on your team and placing them in the right position. (Visionary, Speaker, Thinker, Doer)

Developing your people to be their best and do their best within their abilities. (Helping people to reach their maximum potential by expanding their capabilities)

Being disciplined in your actions (Operate at level worth following)
